Caro On Keto: Ways to Overcome the Keto Flu

The first week of keto can be rough. You will feel that this is not for you, you will want to give up, and the headaches will make you feel weak. Just remember one thing, something that comes easy, goes easy. You have to remind yourself that you are making a lifestyle change. Although there will be times in your life where you are not following the keto guidelines for your meals,  you will learn new eating strategies that is worth the terrible week long keto flu! Here are a couple of tips that worked for me to help me survive the keto flu and achieve a state of ketosis.

Up Your Fats.

Eating more fats when beginning keto is very important. This will help your craving stay at bay, you will feel satiated, and will get into ketosis quicker. Keto is a high fat diet, but if you have fat to lose its best to reduce the intake after you achieve a state of ketosis.

Add More Salt.

Salt is key to beating the keto flu. On a high carb diet, the processed carbs that we eat provide a substantial amount of salt which help our bodies function. When we are not consuming high processed carbs, we need to supplement with extra salt to meet our needs. Adding salt to your food will provide flavor, reduce headaches, curb cravings, and help you retain some water in your body.

Stay Hydrated.

Water, water and more water is your best bet. I keep a bottle with me at all times when I am restarting the diet to keep the keto flu away. Another great option is electrolytes. I prefer Powerade Zero which have no sugar and offer a great source of electrolytes. Personally, I add a pinch of Himalayan pink salt to my bottle to meet my salt intake as well.

Eat Whole Foods.

Sticking to whole foods and whole ingredients is optimal for any diet you take on. The less processed and preservatives in your foods the better. Eat whole foods will keep you satiated and helps avoid cravings. Also this will help you achieve ketosis quicker.

Keep Temptations Away.

When I begin keto, I get rid of all the non-keto food first. Do not torture yourself. I love sweets and bread, so I get rid of that first! Remember in anything you do planning is key. Plan to set yourself up for success. If you need to go out to eat, before you walk in have your order ready to stay on track. You are in control and are responsible for you success. Use all the tools and rock it!

Here's a small list of what to keep to help you combat the keto flu:
Himalayan pink salt - Home Goods
Water
Powerade or Gatorade Zero- Walmart
Mio electrolyte drops- Walmart
Go Ultima powdered electrolyte at pharmacies
Stevia for sweetening - Pyure at Walmart
Coconut oil - Walmart

I hope these tips will help initiate your keto journey and keep the keto flu away! Drink up!
